Why Are We Here?
Why are we here? This question has both plagued and challenged mankind for generations. Is there an ultimate answer, or is it all about mission statements and self-determination? If we are willing to accept the Bible as truth, then we know the answer to "where did we come from?" According to Scripture, we were created by God. So the next question is…why? After all, He is God, and as such, He certainly doesn't need us for anything -- so why did He create us?
The first explanation we get on why we are here is found in Genesis chapter one verses twenty-eight through thirty. It says “ 28 God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground." 29 Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food." And it was so.” So is that it? Is our job only to rule over the birds, fish, and everything in-between and populate the earth? Well if that was the only reason there is still a big question. What are we populating the earth for?
We find our answer in the Great Commission given by our Savior Jesus Christ Himself. It says “18Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Jesus tells them to bring people to salvation through Jesus Christ. This rings true for us as well, but we cannot bring people to Christ if we ourselves do not have Him. Our purpose is to find Christ and then bring others to Him.
But our ultimate purpose is to glorify Him."You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being." Revelation 4:11
